What is a standard poster size?

“Standard poster size” usually means a commonly stocked print or frame dimension rather than one mandatory format. In the U.S., 18×24 and 24×36 inches are common poster dimensions, while 12×18 and 20×30 are popular 2:3 options for printable wall art.

The best size depends on the artwork ratio, available wall space, viewing distance and the resolution of the source image. Before enlarging a file, use the Print Size CalculatorPixels to InchesDPI CheckerPhoto Print Sizes to check whether it contains enough pixels.

Poster sizes on a wall: small, medium or large?

Small

8×10 to 12×18 in works well for shelves, desks, narrow walls or gallery-wall groups.

Medium

16×20 to 18×24 in has more presence while remaining easy to frame and combine.

Large

20×30 to 24×36 in works as a focal piece above furniture or on a larger open wall.

These categories are practical visual groupings, not fixed industry rules. Room dimensions and furniture width change how large a poster feels.

24×36 poster size explained

A 24×36 inch poster measures approximately 61×91.4 cm and uses a 2:3 aspect ratio. At 300 PPI it requires 7200×10800 pixels; at 240 PPI, 5760×8640; at 200 PPI, 4800×7200; and at 150 PPI, 3600×5400.

Because 24×36 is a common large poster and frame size, it is useful for printable wall art. A 2:3 source image scales to it without changing shape, but the image still needs enough resolution for the intended viewing distance.

How many pixels do I need for a poster?

Multiply the print dimensions in inches by the intended PPI. For example, an 18×24 inch poster at 300 PPI needs 5400×7200 pixels. The same physical size at 200 PPI needs 3600×4800 pixels.

300 PPI is a useful high-quality reference, not a universal pass/fail rule. Large wall art is often viewed from farther away, so lower effective resolution may still look appropriate. Use the interactive tool above to compare 300, 240, 200 and 150 PPI instead of relying only on metadata labeled “DPI.”

Standard poster size FAQ

What is the normal size of a poster?

There is no single normal poster size. Common choices include 12×18, 18×24, 20×30 and 24×36 inches. The intended display space and artwork ratio usually determine the best option.

What are typical poster sizes?

Typical U.S. poster dimensions range from smaller 11×14 or 12×18 prints to 18×24, 20×30 and 24×36 inch wall posters. U.S. theatrical one-sheet movie posters commonly use a 27×40 inch format, which is a specialized cinema format rather than a universal wall-art standard.

Is 24×36 a standard poster size?

Yes. 24×36 inches is a common large poster and ready-made frame size in the U.S. It has a 2:3 aspect ratio.

What aspect ratio is an 18×24 poster?

18×24 simplifies to a 3:4 aspect ratio. A 2:3 image would need cropping to fill an 18×24 print edge to edge.

Should I design posters at 300 DPI?

For raster artwork, 300 PPI at final print dimensions is a strong reference for detailed close viewing. Lower effective PPI can still be suitable for larger pieces viewed from farther away. DPI technically describes printer output; PPI describes image pixels per printed inch.
