Why photo sizes crop differently
Common photo prints do not all share one aspect ratio. A 4×6 and 8×12 use 2:3, while 8×10 and 16×20 use 4:5. Moving between ratio families requires cropping, borders or a changed canvas.
A 3:2 camera image can fill 4×6, 8×12, 12×18 and 20×30 without changing shape. It cannot fill 5×7 or 8×10 edge to edge without some crop.
How many pixels do I need for a photo print?
Multiply each print dimension in inches by the intended PPI. At 300 PPI, a 5×7 needs 1500×2100 pixels and an 8×10 needs 2400×3000 pixels. Use lower PPI only after considering source quality and viewing distance.
