How to measure a picture frame size

1. Measure the artworkMeasure the width and height of the print itself, not the outside of an existing frame.
2. Decide whether you want a matNo mat: use a frame that matches the print size. With a mat: the frame must be larger than the artwork.
3. Check the aspect ratioA frame can be larger and still have a different shape. Ratio tells you whether the artwork fits without cropping.

Frame size vs. print size: what is the difference?

A frame labeled 16 × 20 is generally intended for artwork around 16 × 20 inches when used without a mat. With a mat, a smaller print can sit inside that larger frame. The visible opening may be slightly smaller because the frame lip or mat overlaps the edge of the artwork.

For digital wall art, check resolution first, then frame compatibility. A file may have enough pixels for a 24 × 36 print but still need cropping if its aspect ratio is not 2:3.

Picture frame size FAQ

What are standard picture frame sizes?

Common U.S. sizes include 4×6, 5×7, 8×10, 11×14, 16×20, 18×24, 20×30 and 24×36 inches. Availability varies, and some sizes belong to different aspect-ratio families.

How do you measure picture frame size?

Start with the width and height of the artwork that needs to fit inside. If you are replacing an existing frame, measure its inside opening rather than the outside decorative dimensions.

What size frame do I need for a 16×20 picture?

For a simple no-mat fit, start with a 16×20 frame. If you want a mat, choose a larger frame and calculate the mat border around the 16×20 artwork.

What size frame do I need for a 20×30 inch picture?

A 20×30 inch print has a 2:3 ratio and fits a 20×30 inch frame without a mat. A larger 2:3 frame such as 24×36 is not an exact no-mat fit for a 20×30 print; it requires a mat or another mounting treatment.

Does a 24×36 poster fit a 24×36 frame?

Yes, as a nominal size match. Allow for the small amount of edge overlap created by the frame lip, and check the manufacturer's actual opening dimensions when precision matters.
