PRINT RESOLUTION GUIDE

DPI vs PPI

DPI and PPI are often used as if they mean the same thing. For digital print files, the distinction helps you calculate size correctly and avoid the myth that changing a metadata number creates detail.

DPI vs PPI in one sentence

PPI describes image pixels per printed inch. DPI technically describes printer dots per inch. People often say “300 DPI image” when they really mean an image prepared to print at 300 PPI.

PPI: pixels per inch

PPI connects a raster image's pixel dimensions to physical print dimensions. A 3000×4500 pixel image printed at 300 PPI becomes 10×15 inches. Printed at 150 PPI, the same pixels span 20×30 inches.

print inches = pixels ÷ PPI

DPI: dots per inch

DPI belongs to printer output: the device may place many ink or toner dots to reproduce each image pixel. Printer DPI and image PPI are related to output quality but are not interchangeable measurements.

72 DPI vs 300 DPI: what changes?

If you only change an image's resolution metadata from 72 to 300 without resampling, the pixel count does not increase. What changes is the default physical-size interpretation in software that honors that metadata.

For example, a 3000-pixel edge contains 3000 pixels whether its metadata says 72, 96 or 300. At an actual 300 PPI print size, that edge covers 10 inches.

What PPI should I use for wall art?

300 PPIUseful high-detail reference.
240 PPIStrong quality for many photo/art prints.
200 PPIPractical wall-art range.
150 PPIOften considered for larger viewing distances.

Do not treat these as universal guarantees. Source quality, sharpening, printer, media and viewing distance all affect the result.

DPI vs PPI FAQ

Is 300 DPI the same as 300 PPI?

No technically, although the terms are frequently used interchangeably in print-file instructions. Image resolution is more accurately described as PPI.

Can I make a 72 DPI image 300 DPI?

You can change the metadata label, but that alone does not add pixels. To preserve the same physical print size at a higher PPI, the image needs more pixel dimensions.

Does DPI matter for Etsy digital downloads?

Buyers ultimately need enough pixels for their intended print size. Listing clear pixel dimensions and supported print sizes is more informative than relying only on a DPI label.
