Wall Art Print Ratios Explained

Learn how 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 11:14 and ISO/A-series ratios relate to common print sizes—and why changing ratios usually means cropping, not stretching.

What is an aspect ratio in wall art?

An aspect ratio compares width with height. A portrait file that is 4000 × 6000 pixels has a 2:3 ratio because both dimensions reduce to the same 2-to-3 relationship. The same shape can be printed at 8 × 12, 12 × 18 or 20 × 30 inches without changing the composition.

Ratio and resolution solve different problems. Ratio tells you the shape of the print. Pixel dimensions and PPI tell you how much image detail is available at a chosen physical size.

Common wall art ratios and print sizes

These examples are common size families. Availability varies by printer, frame supplier and country, so use the chart as a preparation guide rather than a promise that every size is stocked everywhere.

Ratio familyCommon print sizesShape note
2:34×6, 8×12, 12×18, 16×24, 20×30, 24×36 inTall / photographic proportion
3:46×8, 9×12, 12×16, 18×24, 24×32 inSlightly squarer than 2:3
4:58×10, 12×15, 16×20, 20×25, 24×30 inCommon portrait frame family
11:1411×14, 22×28 inDistinct ratio; not the same as 4:5

A size can be close to another ratio without being identical. For example, 11×14 is not 4:5, so using the exact same crop for both may trim the artwork differently.

2:3 vs 3:4 vs 4:5: what actually changes?

2:3

Longer and narrower. A portrait composition keeps more vertical space and may crop more from the sides when converted to squarer ratios.

3:4

A middle shape between 2:3 and 4:5. It is common for 9×12, 12×16 and 18×24 prints.

4:5

Squarer than 2:3 and 3:4. It fits popular sizes such as 8×10 and 16×20.

11:14

Its own ratio. It sits close to 4:5 visually, but an exact 11×14 crop is different from an 8×10 crop.

Why you should crop instead of stretch

When an artwork changes from one ratio to another, the canvas shape changes. Stretching the image to fill the new shape distorts circles, faces, text and other visual elements. A better workflow keeps the artwork proportional and crops only the edges that do not fit.

  1. Start with the master artwork. Keep the highest-quality source untouched.
  2. Choose a target ratio. Decide whether you need 2:3, 3:4, 4:5, 11:14 or ISO.
  3. Preview the crop. Move the crop when the focal point, text or important details are too close to an edge.
  4. Export each approved ratio separately. Do not resize one finished ratio into another by stretching it.
  5. Check the pixel dimensions. A correct ratio can still be too small for the largest print you advertise.

Which ratios should Etsy wall art sellers offer?

There is no universal bundle that every seller must use. A practical choice is to offer only the ratio families that match your artwork, your target print sizes and the files you can quality-check. Many sellers use several families because one composition can then fit more common frame sizes, but every added ratio should be reviewed rather than generated blindly.

Simple bundle

Use a small set of ratio families that covers your most important print sizes and keeps the download easy to understand.

Broader bundle

Add more ratios only when the composition survives the crop and the source resolution supports the promised print sizes.

Wall art ratio FAQ

What ratio is 8 × 10?

8 × 10 reduces to a 4:5 ratio.

What ratio is 12 × 18?

12 × 18 reduces to a 2:3 ratio.

What ratio is 18 × 24?

18 × 24 reduces to a 3:4 ratio.

Is 11 × 14 the same as 4:5?

No. 11:14 is its own ratio. It is visually close to 4:5, but the crop is not identical.

Are A4 and A3 the same ratio?

Yes. ISO A-series sizes preserve the same √2 aspect ratio as the paper size changes.

Can one JPG work for every print ratio?

One master artwork can be the starting point, but different ratio families usually need separate crops to avoid stretching or unexpected trimming.

Does aspect ratio tell me whether my file is high resolution?

No. Aspect ratio describes shape. Check pixel dimensions and effective PPI separately to evaluate print size.
