How Big Can I Print My Image?
Use the pixel dimensions of your image to estimate how large it can print. At 300 PPI, the calculation is simple: divide the width and height in pixels by 300.
How to calculate print size from pixels
For a practical high-resolution estimate, divide each pixel dimension by the target PPI. At 300 PPI, a 3000 × 4500 px image becomes 10 × 15 inches because 3000 ÷ 300 = 10 and 4500 ÷ 300 = 15.

Pixel width ÷ 300 = print width in inches.
Height
Pixel height ÷ 300 = print height in inches.
This calculation estimates size from the pixels already in the file. Changing a PPI metadata field does not create new image detail.

What does 300 PPI mean?
PPI means pixels per inch. It describes how densely the pixels in a digital image are used when the image is printed at a particular physical size. If an image is 3000 pixels wide and you print it 10 inches wide, the effective resolution is 300 pixels per inch.

DPI is a printer term
DPI technically refers to printer dots. Sellers often use DPI and PPI interchangeably, but they are not the same measurement.
Can I print larger than the 300 PPI size?
Yes, sometimes. Printing the same image larger lowers the effective PPI. Whether that still looks good depends on the source image, the printing process, the type of artwork and how far away the print is normally viewed.
For example, a 3600 × 5400 px file printed at 18 × 27 inches uses 200 PPI instead of 300 PPI. That may be acceptable for some larger wall art viewed from farther away, but it is not equivalent to having a true 5400 × 8100 px source at 300 PPI.

Does changing 72 PPI to 300 PPI improve image quality?
Not by itself. If the pixel dimensions remain unchanged, editing the PPI metadata does not add new pixels. A 3000 × 4500 px image still contains 3000 × 4500 pixels whether its metadata says 72 PPI, 96 PPI or 300 PPI.
What changes is the physical size associated with those pixels. At 300 PPI, 3000 × 4500 px corresponds to 10 × 15 inches. If you need a larger true 300 PPI print, you need more source pixels or a careful upscaling workflow that you evaluate for real detail and artifacts.
What Etsy wall art sellers should check before exporting
- Check pixel dimensions. Make sure the source file has enough pixels for the largest size you intend to promise.
- Check the print ratio. Enough resolution does not guarantee the image fits 2:3, 3:4, 4:5 or 11:14 without cropping.
- Preview important crops. Faces, text and focal details can be cut off when a ratio changes.
- Do not rely on metadata alone. A file marked 300 PPI can still be too small for a large print if the pixel dimensions are low.
- Test the largest promised size. Inspect detail at 100% and consider a physical proof when print quality is critical.
