Etsy Print on Demand Pricing: Costs, Shipping and Real Profit
Print-on-demand pricing becomes confusing when customer shipping, partner shipping and product cost are mixed together. Separate the money flows and the profit becomes much easier to see.
For Etsy POD, four numbers should never be mixed together
| Number | Meaning | Where it belongs |
|---|---|---|
| Item price | What you charge for the product | Customer checkout |
| Shipping paid by customer | Shipping amount collected from the buyer | Customer checkout |
| Manufacturing cost charged by partner | What your production partner charges to make the item | Business costs |
| Shipping cost charged by partner | What your production partner charges to send the order | Business costs |
Keeping these separate prevents customer-paid shipping from being mistaken for profit and makes free-shipping scenarios much easier to understand.
Scenario 1: the customer pays shipping separately
Suppose your listing has an item price and the buyer also pays a shipping charge. The checkout total includes both amounts. Your production partner then charges you separately for manufacturing and shipping.
If the buyer pays the same shipping amount that your partner charges you, shipping is still not perfectly neutral because Etsy's percentage fees can apply to the shipping amount collected from the buyer.
Scenario 2: free shipping to the customer
“Free shipping” means the customer sees zero shipping at checkout. It does not mean the fulfillment cost disappears. Your production partner can still charge you to ship the order, so that cost must be absorbed by the item price and included in your profitability calculation.
Do not bury partner shipping inside “other costs.” Keep it visible so you can compare paid-shipping and free-shipping strategies.
Scenario 3: build shipping into the item price
Many POD sellers raise the item price to help cover a free-shipping offer. If partner shipping is US$5, increasing the item price by exactly US$5 does not necessarily restore the same profit because Etsy fees are calculated from the higher selling price. Recalculate the full order after changing the price.
Remember currency when your partner bills in USD
Your Etsy shop and your production partner may use different currencies. Convert partner costs consistently using a visible exchange rate, but do not confuse that internal planning conversion with Etsy's own currency-conversion fee. Etsy's 2.5% currency-conversion fee applies when Etsy itself has to convert payment funds because your listing currency differs from the currency of your payment account.
What a POD price should cover
- Manufacturing cost charged by the production partner
- Shipping cost charged by the production partner
- Packaging or other direct per-order costs when applicable
- Etsy listing and transaction fees
- Country-specific Etsy Payments processing
- Offsite Ads when an order is attributed
- Relevant taxes, withholding or fee taxes for your situation
- Your desired net profit
Calculate your own Etsy price and profit
Reading the fee structure is useful, but your real result depends on your country, product costs, shipping, advertising and target profit. The free calculator works in both directions: check what you keep from an existing price, or calculate the selling price needed for a target margin.
Frequently asked questions
Does customer-paid shipping count as profit on Etsy?
It is part of the checkout amount collected from the customer, but it should not be treated as net profit. You still need to subtract the shipping cost charged to you and the applicable marketplace fees.
How do I price an Etsy POD product with free shipping?
Set customer-paid shipping to zero, keep the actual partner shipping cost in your business costs, and choose an item price that covers manufacturing, partner shipping, Etsy fees and your profit target.
Should I combine manufacturing and partner shipping into one cost?
You can mathematically, but keeping them separate makes the result easier to audit and helps compare free-shipping versus customer-paid-shipping strategies.
Does Etsy charge fees on shipping?
Etsy states that its 6.5% transaction fee applies to shipping charged to the customer, and payment processing is also calculated from the total sale amount under the seller's country rules.
