Why Is My Etsy Printable Blurry?
Diagnose blurry Etsy printable wall art by checking source pixels, effective PPI, enlargement, export format and target print size before changing the file.
Check effective PPI first
Take the exported pixel dimensions and divide by the intended print dimensions in inches. This tells you the actual pixel density the buyer gets at that size.
Check the weakest source element
A large canvas can still contain a small low-resolution photo or texture. Exporting the whole design at a larger size does not guarantee that every embedded element contains enough detail.
Avoid repeated compression and enlargement
Repeated JPG saves, aggressive compression and enlarging already-small artwork can all make softness more visible. Keep a strong master and export deliberately for each delivery format.
Real example: one file, four print sizes
Suppose the delivered artwork is 2400 × 3000 px. It is a 4:5 file, but its effective PPI falls as the buyer prints it larger.
| Print size | Effective PPI | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| 8 × 10 in | 300 PPI | Strong detail |
| 12 × 15 in | 200 PPI | Good general print |
| 16 × 20 in | 150 PPI | Softer at close viewing |
| 24 × 30 in | 100 PPI | Clear risk of visible softness |
Example 2: changing 72 DPI to 300 DPI does not add detail
A 1200 × 1800 px file contains 2.16 million pixels whether its metadata says 72, 150 or 300. At 300 PPI those pixels map to 4 × 6 inches. A 12 × 18 inch 300-PPI print needs 3600 × 5400 px.
Blurry-print diagnostic checklist
- Read the exported pixel dimensions.
- Check the largest print size promised in the listing.
- Calculate effective PPI for that size.
- Inspect embedded photos/textures that may be smaller than the canvas.
- Check whether the artwork was enlarged more than once.
- Avoid repeated low-quality JPG saves.
- Run the final file through Print Size Hub before delivery.
Frequently asked questions
Will changing 72 DPI to 300 DPI fix blur?
Not by itself. If pixel dimensions stay the same, changing only the metadata does not create new image detail.
Why does my Canva design look sharp on screen but blurry in print?
Screens can hide resolution limits. Print spreads the available pixels across a physical area, so insufficient pixel density becomes more visible.
How can I check my printable?
Use the free Print Size Hub to read pixel dimensions locally and compare effective PPI at the intended print size.
